1. On HTML5

What i think about HTML5 so far? Well this image describes it perfectly.

    HTML5 on fire

Sure it makes some things simpler, and some harder, but that’s it. No innovation, just different names. Still waiting for the “can’t be done with Flash” demo, and I am sure it will come.

  2. SEO support for Flash content

One big disadvantage of Flash sites is that they aren’t searchable and even for humans its sometimes hard to really tell what some Flash sites are about.
The Adobe solution for this is to provide searchable swf files, but that’s extremely inconvenient for many reasons. For example the dynamic text fields are, for obvious reasons, not supported.

I strongly believe that searchible swfs are a dead end, but there is a trick to skip the needed user interaction on sites to get the desired content and still doesn’t be bothered by page reloading. SWFAddress is a “deep linking” library for Ajax and Flash based sites. Now google can crawl the content from the sub sites as well, but the bot still can’t read the swf. Well let’s give that something he can work with, like a text description of what this sub page is about. That’s the main idea behind a little workaround I’ve used to index my Flash portfolio site on google. more…

    combo breaker

I’m talking about the end() method. This little method isn’t used as often as it should be, since it provides a nifty shortcut to the original element that was used at the beginning of the jQuery methods chain. more…

  4. Fixing Firefox bug with fullbrowser Flash sites

    scroll bug and swffit

This one is a really annoying one. Every time you set the focus on the flash movie, e.g. by clicking, the scrollbars appear and your movie jumps some pixels. This bug was introduced in the Firefox 3.6 version and they still haven’t fixed it.

Many awesome sites (Wrangler Blue Bell, We Choose the Moon or Arena Estádios) didn’t pay attention to this important detail. But luckily there is a simple fix. You need SWFObject (a must have anyway), and swffit this little JavaScript extension for SWFObject disables the scrollbars and append them only if the window gets smaller than the values you have declared while the setup.

    trace Hello World

Finally i can start to blog! It took me quite long to get the portfolio site done. But that’s ok, I’ve learned more and I can blog about more.

I’m pretty new to blogging, my English has a huge lack of practice, I didn’t took much time to optimize the blog. But my goal is to improve by taking small steps and provide valuable contents. So if you are into design and programming you definitively should grab the RSS feed. Upcoming articles are going to cover introduction and tips to some frameworks, libraries and software.
